Have you ever considered that our pets need blood transfusions just as we humans do? Animals need transfusions for the same reasons that humans do, including surgery, trauma and disease. Healthy donors are needed to give blood to the many pets that need transfusions. A single donation can be used to save up to four other pets’ lives!

Many veterinary offices draw and maintain their own blood bank. Be sure to ask your vet if your dog or cat is a good candidate. There are several notable animal blood banks in the U.S. Feel free to do a search for ones accepting donations in your area. I've included two of the most prominent organizations here.

The Pet Blood Bank Accepts donations from dogs. Dog Eligibility requirements:

Be healthy and current on vaccinations and heartworm preventatives
Be between the ages of 1 and 9
Weigh at least 50 lbs.
Have a friendly disposition
Be available to donate at least four times a year

Donation is a simple procedure and does not require anesthesia or sedation. The donation process generally takes 10 – 20 minutes. Dogs do not need to fast before donating. The Importance of Microchips!

A calico cat, missing for nine months, was reunited Thursday with her owner, now living in Arizona.

RV ran away from home in July just as her owner was preparing to move to Tucson, Ariz., said Nancy McKenney, interim director for King County Animal Care and Control.

In February, RV was found in Federal Way and turned in to a shelter. Animal Control officers were able to find the owner in his new home thanks to a microchip he had embedded in RV.

The owner also made sure to update his information with the agency monitoring the microchip information, McKenney said.

"This is a great example of why it is so important to have two forms of identification on your cat at all times," McKenney said. "If your pet wears an ID tag, a license, and has a microchip, the chances of having your pet return home are exponentially greater than if they were wearing just one form of identification or none at all."

She looks EXACTLY like my beloved cat, Hermie. I find it so odd that she is also very small for an adult cat, just like my kitty. I am begging for somebody to adopt her or for a rescue to pull her and give her a second chance!

March 1st is National Pig Day, a special day created to honor and appreciate the pig as an intelligent, social creature. Those who know pigs can't help but be charmed by their intelligent, highly social, and sensitive nature. Pigs are actually more intelligent than any breed of dog. Like dogs, piglets learn their names by two to three weeks of age and respond when called. They are also very discriminating eaters, and are particular about their living space. Pigs enjoy novelty and are extremely active and inquisitive.
Few species are more social than pigs; they form close bonds with each other and other species, including humans. They are quite gregarious and cooperate with, and defend, one another. Adults in the entire social group will protect a piglet, leaving their own litters if necessary to defend an endangered youngster. If one pig starts to dig out tree roots, others invariably join in.
Touch and bodily contact are especially important to pigs. They seek out and enjoy close contact, and will lie close together when resting. They also enjoy close contact with people familiar to them; they like being scratched behind the ears and shoulders, and, at the touch of your hand, will grunt contentedly and roll over for a belly rub.
Pigs are vocal and communicate constantly with one another. More than 20 of their vocalizations have been identified. Pigs most often say "gronk" (more commonly known as "oink"), and will say "baawrp" when happy. They have an elaborate courtship ritual, including a song between males and females. Newborn piglets learn to run to their mother's voice, and the mother pig sings to her young while nursing. After nursing, a piglet will sometimes run to her mother's face to rub snouts and grunt. Pigs also enjoy music.

Yet many pigs do not lead such noble lives; the hog industry confines many female pigs to farrowing crates, claiming these are necessary to protect piglets from being crushed by their careless mothers. Yet when given more room, sows are very gentle with their piglets. Before a mother pig lies down in a bed of straw, she roots around to make sure all the piglets are out, a safeguard against accidentally harming one of them. Text taken from here. My handsome, beloved dog, Reuben, celebrated his 11th birthday yesterday! He was the product of a boxer and a lab. Labeled a "trash litter" by his mother's owners, Reuben and his siblings were dropped off at a local animal rescue. A few months later, my mom and I went searching for a medium-large breed male puppy, which led us to Reuben.
For the past (nearly) 11 years, Reuben has been a loyal, playful, protective companion. Here's to many more years of the greatest dog on earth!

Durbin, WV - Sweet senior dog needs rescue/adopt URGENT!

This sweet dog is Elijah. He will die this week if not pulled by a rescue or adopted by a loving individual/family. He's been at the shelter a "long time" and his time is running out! February is National Bird Feeding Month!

In 1994, Congress officially declared February National Bird Feeding Month!

February is one of the most difficult months for survival among wild birds. Because of the extreme low temperatures, their bodies require extra calories to keep them warm. Food and water supplies are usually very low at this time of year. They also need water to bathe in, since dirty feathers do not insulate against the cold as well. Shelter is also essential because it protects the birds from wind, snow, and hail. Shelter can range from a heavy brush pile to any type of bird house, but make sure the birdhouses you have are suitable for the species of winter birds in your area.

While we are nearing the end of February, it doesn't look like winter is going to be going away anytime soon. We are all encouraged to make our backyards safe sanctuaries for our wild birds by provide food, water, and shelter.

Consider the following:
• A typical backyard bird weighs less than two nickels,
• Birds spend most of their waking hours searching for food,
• In below-freezing temperatures, snow is the only “water” birds may find, and
• Birds can use up to 15 percent of their body weight overnight just keeping warm.

February is Pet Dental Month!

Fido's or Fluffy's bad breath could be more than a smelly annoyance; it might signify a serious health risk with the potential to damage not only the animal's teeth and gums but its internal organs as well.

To address the significance of oral health care for pets, several veterinary groups are sponsoring National Pet Dental Health Month in February. Sponsors include the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, American Veterinary Dental College, Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians, Veterinary Oral Health Council and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc.

According to the AVDS, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three, often indicated by bad breath, a change in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face and mouth and depression.

Although daily tooth brushing is advised for dogs and cats, only 2 percent of dog owners follow through. In addition, 65 percent of dogs with stage one periodontal disease often go untreated because veterinary health care teams do not recommend needed treatment options like dental exams, professional dental cleaning and dental x-rays.

AVMA President Dr. James Cook warns pet owners trying to save money in the current economic crisis not to skimp on regular veterinary care for their pets.

"Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets," said Dr. Cook. "Twice-a-year checkups, including an oral health checkup, are important to ensure your pet is not in pain and is not suffering from serious oral health problems. Besides causing receding gums and tooth loss, bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream, potentially infecting the heart, liver and kidneys, which can be potentially life threatening.

"Just as the public has come to realize that their own oral health is linked to their overall health, veterinarians want people to understand that dental health care is essential to maintaining the overall health and well-being of the family pet."

Pet Dental Health Campaign spokesperson Dr. Linda J. DeBowes, DVM, veterinarian at Shoreline Veterinary Dental Clinic, Seattle, concurs.

"The expenses associated with professional dental treatment may be significant; however, if this preventive care is not done, the cost to the owner may well be much higher in diagnostics and management of dental disease," Dr. DeBowes said.

In addition to professional dental care, Dr. DeBowes advises pet owners to make oral home care part of their pet's routine as a way to prevent tooth decay.

Veterinarians can help pet owners begin a pet dental care routine at home, and encourage them to continue regular veterinary check ups to monitor their pets' oral health.

Easton, PA - Lovely dog in search of furever home!

This beautiful girl is Cordelia, a 4-5 year old Shepherd/Lab mix. Cordelia is currently in foster care because she does not do well with life at the kennel. In a home, she is a quiet, calm dog who is very attentive and eager to please. She may display some anxiety over being left alone, but it's nothing that can't be worked on. She bonds quickly with her caretakers and would be a most loyal friend.

She walks wonderfully on a leash, she's housebroken, and crate trained. She gets along with most other dogs (and it helps her to be alone at home if she has a canine companion) but she cannot go to a home with cats. She's so sweet and desperately desiring the consistency of a permanent home and family!

She's currently living with 3 kids over the age of 9 and is doing well. However, she won't be placed with anyone under the age of 13.

Cordelia is in foster care through The Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Easton, PA. The shelter is located in Northeast Pennsylvania (Nazareth, Easton, Bethlehem area), but the adoption doesn't necessarily need to be local.

Cocoa Mulch Can Be Toxic to Pets

With spring right around the corner, I'm sure many of us will be working in our gardens and landscaping our yards, which also serve as play areas for our cats and dogs. Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it attracts dogs. If they ingest this, they may die. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline.

While it's hard to see her behind the metal cage, this beautiful girl is actually a Border Terrier/Standard Poodle mix. Her Petfinder description reads:

She is a pretty dog, with Border Collie colours and out-going personality. She also has a bristley or whiskery coat, and a bounce to her step, which indicates she may have standard poodle in her. She is very young, under 2 years of age. She was left abandoned at a Tim Horton's.

February 14 is Pet Theft Awareness Day!

Tomorrow, February 14, is Pet Theft Awareness Day, sponsored by Last Chance for Animals. This year will be the 20th anniversary of this very important pet awareness day! Sadly, many dogs, cats and other domestic animals are stolen every year, often by Class "B" dealers, who are licensed to purchase and sell animals for research. Unfortunately, they often resort to stealing our beloved animal companions, sometimes from right within our own yards. These animals are often stolen pets, strays or animals obtained under false pretenses and deception such as “free to good home” ads. It is virtually impossible to know the true history of an animal acquired by a Class “B” dealer. Each time a Class “B” dealer sells an animal to a research lab, a strong possibility exists that it is a lost or stolen family pet.

Here are some tips, offered by Last Chance for Animals, on how to protect your pet and family from animal theft:

DON’T leave companion animals unattended in your yard. It only takes a minute for someone to steal your pet.
DON’T allow your pet to be visible from the street.
DON’T leave your dog tied up outside restaurants or stores.
DON’T leave any animal unattended in your car, even if it is “just for a minute.”
DON’T use “free to good home” ads to place companion animals. These ads are often answered by Class “B” dealers. Contact a rescue group for assistance in conducting your own adoption.

DO spay and neuter your companion animals. This reduces your animal’s desire to stray and reduces the risk of your companion animal being stolen for breeding purposes.

DO provide your companion animals with collars, ID tags, and licenses. Speak with your veterinarian about backup forms of identifications, including tattooing and microchipping.

DO keep recent photos and written descriptions of your companion animals on hand at all times.

DO keep dogs and cats indoors, especially when you’re not home.

DO know where your animals are at all times. Treat your companion animals as you would a small child.

DO educate family, friends, and neighbors about pet theft

Properly Identifying Your Pet
A good dog collar with an ID tag is the first line of defense against pet theft; however, a collar can break or be pulled off. In addition to a collar, dogs should have permanent identification. Microchipping and/or tattooing your pet are excellent ways to ensure their safety.

Additionally, if your pet ends up at a research or medical facility, the researchers are required by law to look for any tattoos, and, if one is found, they must trace the pet back to the owner.

Carolina Prime Pet Announces Nationwide Recall of Dog Treats

Carolina Prime Pet, a manufacturer and distributor of dog treats, is voluntarily recalling four of its dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste.
Salmonella is an organism that can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The recalled treats are sold at various retail establishments in the U.S. and Canada. Although Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

A dog toy called Rough & Rugged® Pimple Ball with Bell by Four Paws was recalled in August 2008. The company recalled the toys after they received numerous reports of injuries related to the toys. I know that many times consumers are not alerted about the dangers or recalls of products, so I am posting this, despite the original date of the recall. If your dog currently has one of these toys, go HERE to find out how to get a refund/replacement. Note: I am not sure what the replacement is. I would advise only getting the replacement if it is a redesign of the original toy, which will prevent the injuries. There is a contact number for the company at the above link.

Below is a story from an actual consumer whose dog experienced severe, and what could have been life threatening, injuries.

On June 22, 2008 , my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws, Inc., produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell (Item #20227-001, UPC Code #0 4566320227 9).

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City ) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball removed. Because the size of the opening on t he ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in ord er to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth. Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed

overnight for any changes. By the following morning, Chai's tongue had swollen even more.

(That is the dog's tongue, not the toy.)

He was taken to his regular vet, Dr. Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved. On June 26, 2008 , Chai had his tongue amputated. He was kept in after-care for an additional three days.

On Sunday, June 29th, I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed. On the way home from the vet we stopped at Petland Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also ga ve me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet.

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story, their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5,000 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.Additionally, I now have to re-teach my dog to eat, drink and adjust to life without his tongue. Feeding him takes me about 90 minutes twice a day and for at least this first week he is not to be unattended for more than 20 minutes at a time

The owner also contacted the company, but was told there weren't enough cases to do anything about it. Obviously, they have since recalled the products.

Orlando, FL - Dog needs rescue/adoption ASAP!

This is Scarface. What an unfit name for such a sweet dog! Scarface is a 1 year old brindle and white male Pit Bull mix. According to workers, he's so happy and full of life! He seems to LOVE everyone! He walks very well on a leash and would make a great companion for anyone, including single people or families! He was originally listed as fearful and seemed somewhat shy, but once he was able to come out and play, he was literally bouncing and prancing around the yard, enjoying play time with humans and other dogs. He is housebroken.

Scarface's last day was supposed to be Thursday, January 22; however, because a rescue worker likes him so much, they've managed to extend his time to this Saturday, January 24th. If not adopted or pulled by a rescue group by this time, he will be euthanized.

$200 has been donated to cover the cost of his heartworm treatment, because he unfortunately tested positive. This can and will be fixed with the treatment this donation will provide, if only someone will save him from death first.

They are located at Montcalm County Animal Shelter. Three dogs were picked up last week. Even the most prepared pet parent doesn't always have the extra funds for expensive emergency treatment, such as when Fluffy swallows a string or Spot gets hit by a car. I am currently working with a wonderful rescue located in Akron, OH called Paws and Prayers. They do not have a physical shelter where they keep animals. Instead, every animal is fostered in a home until they find the perfect person/family to adopt them. The people involved with this rescue organization are truly dedicated to the animals they serve. They are mainly a dog rescue, but they also foster cats (I'm currently fostering 3).
They pull many dogs from death row in county shelters and pounds. Paws and Prayers is in desperate need for some foster volunteers to take these wonderful dogs into their homes until forever homes can be found. Providing a temporary home for these dogs will literally save their lives. The rescue pays for all vet care, food, and other supplies.
You do not have to live in Akron to foster for Paws and Prayers. They work throughout the Northeast Ohio area.

Waycross, GA - Puppy mill raided, dogs need your help!

The Okefenokee Humane Society, along with other agencies, raided a puppy mill in Waycross, GA! At the end of the day, they rescued 23 Dachshunds. They still have5-6 to trap next week. All rescued dogs were taken to the Okefenokee Humane Society, which has put a huge strain on the shelter, both physically and financially.
The dogs range in age from 5 months to 7 years, with the majority being between 5 years-7 years. The older dogs were still being bred. All dogs have mange and are currently being treated.

The shelter is asking that anyone able to donate funds, even the smallest amount, please do so. The dogs need sponsorship to pay for their care. This shelter is very full and a very high kill facility. If the dogs do not get funds to cover their medical and care expenses, they will be euthanized.

Akron, OH - My foster kittens need forever home(s)!

These are my three beautiful, playful, and amazing foster kittens. I rescued them from underneath my neighbor's porch. They had been left to live outside through the snow and below freezing temperatures, being fed nothing but human table scraps! Last summer I rescued their siblings, their mother's previous litter. I can tell you that while this mother cat has had the misfortune of living outside 24/7 and not being spayed, she has produced some wonderful litters of kittens!

These little guys are about 3 months old. They've been to the vet, received all of their routine shots, been dewormed, and now have a clean bill of health! They will be neutered once they are old enough (the vet waits until their are at least 4 months old). I am fostering them through a no-kill, non-profit rescue that will pay for the kittens' spay/neuter.

The black kitten is Daisy. She's sort of the leader of the pack. Daisy is almost always the one to instigate something! She's very curious and adventurous. She's also a huge love bug! Her purr sounds like a motorboat, and you don't even have to touch her to get it going! Yet, she rather play with you or lay next to you than be held on your lap or in your arms.

The gray kitten is Matilda. She's the shy, quiet one of the group, but don't let that fool you. She can play and tumble like the best of them! If you're gentle with her, you'll have her purring in no time! She's also more than willing to lay in somebody's arms.

The long-haired kitten is Simba. He's the bodyguard of the group and also happens to think of himself as a little lion. He's very easy to hold in your arms when he's not tumbling and rolling around on the ground! He enjoys play, but I believe he'll grow into the ultimate lap cat! He puts on a brave, strong front, but I think he just wants a a super plush kitty bed, plenty of toys, and a lifetime supply of kitty treats.

Daisy, Matilda, and Simba are the ultimate feline three musketeers! They're a wonderful team and I believe they find comfort and confidence in one another. They have only been with me for a week, which has been their first experience with such close human contact. They are not feral cats. They are very friendly, but they can be a bit shy at times, especially with new people, new setting, and new situations. I believe the reason they have flourished so well within the last 7 days is because they have had each other. It would be my dream to find them a wonderful home together. I realize that this might not be possible, but I am asking that if anyone has the room in their heart and home for this wonderful troop to please consider adopting all three, or at least two. If one is left, I might adopt him or her, as their older sister would sure love a forever playmate!

The rescue is based in the Akron area, but I can adopt the kittens to surrounding Northeast Ohio area.

Meriden, CT - Cat in need of foster ASAP!

This is Solider, a semi-feral cat that has been living at the Meriden Humane Society in Meriden, Connecticut since he was 9 weeks old. I say semi-feral since he has been in contact with humans from a young age and is not completely wild. He is simply rather scared of people and needs someone to work with him on this. He is part of a "troop" of cats that was abandoned at the shelter a year ago.
Soldier adores other cats, but he is terribly frightened of most people. The shelter staff has been working with him very hard. Those working with him want to emphasize that just because Soldier is scared, this doesn't mean he isn't a good cat. He will let people pet him and every once and a while he'll even push his head up into your hand, demanding a pet! He also loves Chicken & Shrimp Meow Mix cups. The worker who contacted me about Soldier says that out of the over 100 cats currently at the shelter, Soldier is by far her favorite.

Soldier should only go to a home with adults or older children and teenagers who can understand Soldier's special needs at the moment. He should also only go to a dog-free household. A dog would probably terrify poor Soldier so much that he would hide and never come out. It would also be nice if he had a single room or area to stay in at first, rather than the entire house. This will reduce the places he can hide and also keep from overwhelming him too much.
Solider is in need of an understanding person who realizes he is scared and will give him the love he deserves and appreciate his independence. Soldier will need a quiet home where there are limited places for him to hide. He needs to go somewhere that is quiet and comfortable, so that he may gain his confidence with people.

Soldier is up-to-date with routine shots, neutered, and house trained.

He currently does not have the best litterbox habits. This is believed to be a side effect of his weight loss, which is a result of his constant physical activity in the cat room! He tends to go wherever he is sitting; however, he usually urinates in the litterbox.

The shelter will pay for food, litter, and vet expenses. They will also provide food dishes and litter boxes, if needed.

Foster families can be from any distance that can be comfortably driven. The shelter wants to be close enough in case he Solider needs to be returned or if there is an emergency; yet, for the most part, any distance a foster family is willing to drive is acceptable.

Orlando, FL - Sweet dog needs adoption/rescue ASAP!

A fellow rescuer is asking that someone please find it in their heart to adopt this dog into your family and home or pull this dog if you are part of a no-kill rescue. She is listed as a 10-year-old Chow Chow mix, but this rescuer believes she is likely some sort of Shepherd mix. She is heartworm positive, but that can be treated. She's gentle and oh so loving. But don't worry, she still has some zest and play in her too! She loves to run around the yard when taken outside. She was so scared when she first arrived at the shelter on December 30th. She just seemed to sit in her little kennel and wish for a home, but nobody has offered. She's a gem and would make a perfect companion for sooooo many families. She's so gentle and would be great with kids. She loves to have her back massaged and to just sit by your side as a faithful companion.

Tallahassee, FL - Orphan pups need foster/rescue URGENT

These little puppies are now orphans. Their mother was shot by three horrible, despicable, worthless young people and then crawled away from the puppies and into the woods to die. The three murderers then kicked the pups and tossed them into the air and let them hit the ground. They thought they had killed one, so they tossed it under an abandoned trailer. A woman caught them and threatened them with a baseball bat, after which the men ran. She called the cops and animal control, but neither showed up. She took in the pups and tried to find somewhere for them to go. Thankfully, a vet recommended she contact a caring animal lover, who did agree to take the pups in. The puppies are now staying with this temporary foster mother, but she is looking for other caring foster homes and or rescues to help her.
There are 6 pups total - 5 girls & 1 boy. They are only about 2.5 weeks old.

The Truth about Declawing

I took my three foster kittens to the vet yesterday for their first exam and shots. While in the waiting room, I witnessed over 3 people come in to schedule declawing surgeries for their cats. Just the sound of it fills me with pain. I had to restrain myself from jumping up and giving a speech about the horrible procedure that is declawing. If I didn't have such wonderful self-control, this is what I would say:

Declawing is not like removing a toenail! It is literally maiming your cat. It's actually multiple amputations comparable to the removal of human fingertips at the first knuckle. Sensory and motor nerves are cut, damaged, and destroyed. Recovery from the surgery is a slow and painful process. This procedure can hamper the sensations and enjoyment involved in walking, running, springing, climbing, and stretching.
While declawing is a popular and lucrative practice in the United States, it is not practiced in European countries. It is, in fact, against the law, in many countries including England, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia.
Cat Owners who elect to have their paws declawed generally do so with the belief that they will never have to deal with fabric damage due to destructive scratching problems. However, paw sensitivity resulting from the declaw operation may result in litterbox avoidance and urine-soaked furnishings or carpeting.
Without its #1 defense system many declawed cats resort to nipping or biting with very little warning. They often use oral means to express their insecurity and this may also result in destructive chewing problems. If your cat is an outdoor cat or sneaks outside, he/she will have no defense against other animals.
For declawed cats, the activities of climbing, jumping, holding, grasping, and ability to balance are all affected and are never the same again.
Cats, like people, react differently to physical handicaps. Some appear to be unaffected and others become nervous and defensive. When a dramatic temperament or behavior change occurs, the cat owner often decides to take the cat to a pound or shelter or have it euthanized by a veterinarian.
Sometimes cats might act as if they are not affected after being declawed, but cats are one of the best creatures at hiding pain.
THERE ARE MORE HUMANE SOLUTIONS! If you don't want your cat scratching the furniture, there are more humane, comfortable ways to do so. Scratching of furniture and other things is 100% preventable without the use of declawing.

Alternatives to declawing:

Soft Paws - lightweight vinyl caps that are glued to the cat's front claws.
Provide a scratching post for you cat. Learn how to make your cat use/prefer the post.

Jacksonville, FL - 2 Norwegian Elkhounds need rescue/adopt URGENT!

These two beautiful dogs are at the Jacksonville Animal Control Facility in Jacksonville, FL. They were dropped off after their owner died. These poor dogs are missing their owners and confused as to why they were left in that death trap. Both dogs are Norwegian Elkhounds.

The male dog is neutered and around 55-60 lbs. The female dog is around 49 lbs. and no spay scar was found on her. Both dogs tested positive for heartworm, but that can be cured with some simple medication.

The dogs were supposed to go to a breed-specific rescue, but that fell through.

There has been a donation made of $75 for each dog. This means that there is already $75 paid to each of the dog's adoption fees.

The dogs only have until the end of today, Wednesday, before they are put to sleep.

Miami, FL - Dog family needs new homes!

This beautiful family of White Shepherd dogs is looking for a new home(s). Mom, dad, and puppies need to find new homes in 6 weeks time! Mom and dad were taken in by an animal rescuer, but were not spayed/neutered. The result is this adorable litter of 8 puppies! It is uncertain whether or not the mom and dad are purebred White Shepherds, but they look pretty close. The pups are about 2 weeks old now. They will all need to find homes once they are 8 weeks old. Rescuers would really like to get homes lined up for as many as possible in advance. More importantly, mom and dad need homes as well. All dogs can be adopted separately or in multiples. All will be spayed/neutered before being adopted out.

Louisiana - Mama dog dumped on side of road, puppies thrown in river!

Poor Mama Mia. This sweet 34 lbs. 1-year-old female dog was found by a dump in Belle Chase, Louisiana. Two men fishing near her reported that a black pickup truck dumped two garbage bags and Mama dog on the side of the road. The person then dumped her puppies in the river. Mama Mia reportedly spent the next week pacing up and down the riverbank, looking for her puppies. A passing Good Samaritan called to the dog, who then ran and jumped in the woman's car.
Mama Mia is currently being held at a local veterinary office, but they cannot keep her much longer. She will have no other option than the county shelter, which euthanizes for space.
The sweet dog has flea dermatitis and is positive for heart worms. These are things she can recover from. She just wants to cuddle up with anyone that will pet her! She is great with other dogs and just wants to play.

These dogs are located at the Levy County Animal Control facility in Bronson, FL. This is a rural shelter at the county landfill. These dogs are desperate to get out of there. Their time is VERY limited. They could have only a few days left. The caring people at the shelter really want to find these babies good homes before their time is up. This is Lucky, a 6-year-old Miniature American Eskimo dog. His family is moving to an area where they are not allowed to have any animals. He has been a family dog his entire life and would like to remain that way. Lucky has excellent health and is groomed regularly. He is great with kids and loves to play with everyone of all ages! Lucky is totally house-trained and loves to sleep in his crate (as pictures above). Lucky will move to his new home with toys, crate, bed pillows, food, and all medical records.

Northern New Jersey - 2 cats in search of new, loving home

These adorable cats are Bozak and Jewel. Unfortunately, their parent has come down with a new health condition and must find the cats a new home. The family has tried to avoid it for a couple of years, but the situation has gotten worse and there is no other option. Bozak is a 7-year-old male. Jewel is a 5-year-old female. They are both neutered/spayed and up to date with their shots. Neither has an existing health concerns or conditions. Bozak and Jewel are friendly, calm, and well-behaved cats. They get along well with children (they have a 3-year-old in their family). The family is not sure about how well the cats get along with dogs. The family wants Bozak and Jewel to remain together, as they have a great bond. These two would make a great addition to any household.

News Years Resolutions for Pet Parents!

Whether you've already made a few New Years resolutions or you don't believe in doing so at all, I encourage all of us to try our best to make 2009 an even better year for all our our animal companions. We can start by making the following promises to our four-legged, furry, feathered, and finned friends (note, all resolutions might not apply to your pet, so think up some of your own).

Spay/neuter your pets - Add more healthy years to your pet's life, improve his/her behavior, and save yourself some sleepless nights (everyone with an unaltered female cat will know what I'm talking about).
Schedule a yearly checkup vet appointment for your pet. - Ideally, a healthy animal should see the vet at least once a year (more if he/she is older or has a medical condition). Make sure they are up-to-date on all shots and vaccines. Try to develop a good relationship with your vet.
Create a safer, more hygienic environment for your pets. - Resolve to clean the litter box or small animal cage more often. If you're already on top of things in this area, resolve to evaluate all your household cleaning products and switch to as many natural, non-toxic products as possible.
Get informed and organized about your pet. - After taking your pet to his/her medical checkup, organize all of your pet's medical information and records you might have. Know what should be normal and is not normal for your animal. Also, make sure you are up to date on licensing and rabies vaccines. Attach all required tags to your dog's collar. If you have an outdoor cat, purchase a little ID tag to attach to their collar.
Be consistent with at home medical care. - Ensure you always give any required medication to your pet. Also, give your dog a routine heart worm preventative. Watch for fleas-and give only prescription flea & tick treatments (NO OTC!)
Feed your pet an age/health appropriate diet. - Consult your vet and look for foods that are appropriate for your pet's health and stage of life.
Train your pet. - Training your pets can greatly improve their behavior, strengthen their bond with you, and provide mental exercise and stimulation. Even animals that aren't traditionally trained, such as cats, can be taught new commands by using a clicking technique.
Give plenty of love & attention. - It seems everybody has a hectic schedule these days, but it doesn't mean our animals should be forgotten. Set aside a certain amount of time every day to spend with your pet.
Groom your pet. - While many animals require a professional groomer, try doing minor things, such as nail trimming and baths, at home. This reduces the stress on your pet and provides a chance to spend time together. If you don't already know how, learn how to properly trim your pet's nails and brush his/her teeth.
Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise. - Exercise stimulates an animal's mind and body, making them better behaved and feeling good! Pet obesity is becoming an increasing concern, so ensure that your pet gets proper exercise each day to stay at his/her appropriate weight. You might try exercising together!
Socialize your pets. - While animals usually love their humans, they need interaction with other animals as well. Try taking your dog to a dog park or agility/training class. There are also pet socialization programs & groups. You could also foster other animals in your home.
Do an inventory of your pet's supplies & accessories. - Ensure that your pet has everything he/she needs and that everything is in good working order. Check their collar-you should be able to slide 2 fingers underneath the collar. Ensure their litter boxes, toys, beds, even clothing are in good condition. If needed, throw out the old and purchase some new.
Pet proof your house. - Ensure that cabinets and other places where chemicals and medicines are kept are secure from pet's access. Many cats and dogs have no trouble opening a kitchen cupboard.
Consider certifying your animal. - If your pet is especially friendly, patience, and gentle, consider certifying it as a therapy animal to visit the elderly or the sick. There are also fantastic programs in which dogs help children learn to read.
Donate money, supplies, or time to a local animal shelter. - Because you love your pet(s) so much, share some of that love with another animal while helping him to find a new home. After you learn some of those new grooming techniques, volunteer to polish some of the animals at the shelter to make them more appealing to adopters. Foster animals in your home to prepare them for family life.
Be a voice. - Be a voice for those animals that have none. Find out how you can help the plight of animals locally and nationally. Also, research the local numbers to contact when your witness animal abuse/cruelty/neglect.

Dealing with the loss of a companion animal

Our companion animals are family members with whom we share a unique bond. It is difficult to imagine our lives without them. Sadly, companion animals do not live as long as people do. Sooner or later, everyone who cares for a pet must face the illness, old age or accidental death of their beloved animal friend. We may have to deal with the difficult decision of whether or when to euthanize a very sick animal to spare him or her further suffering and provide a dignified, peaceful death. Or, because of our financial circumstances, we may be torn about what medical procedures should be done for an animal who has given us loyalty and love. These decisions are some of the hardest we may ever have to make, and are often fraught with confusion and guilt. It is important to be well informed and aware of all humane options in order to make the best possible choice on behalf of a pet.

It is as natural and necessary to grieve for the loss of an animal friend as it is for any loved one who dies. And it is important to have compassion and support in one's time of grief. A pet's illness, accident, death or need for euthanasia can trigger powerful emotions. At such times, many individuals feel confused, frightened, angry, guilty and sad. These emotions are all normal. The ASPCA can help if the animal you love has died or if he or she is ill, injured or elderly.

Pet parents can receive help from the ASPCA Pet Loss Support program with the following issues:

- Assistance with the decision to euthanize.

- Comfort and support at the time of euthanasia.

Woman Cares for 100 Abandoned Dogs

ARDMORE, Oklahoma -- Struggling to make it herself, an Oklahoma woman risks her life to take care of more than 100 abandoned dogs. Catherine Titus lives in a rural area outside of Ardmore with her dogs in only a van.

For the past five years, 71-year-old Titus has called rural Oklahoma home, living out of a van with her closest companions, all 100 of them. She does it because her four-legged friends mean everything to her.

She has also given up almost everything to continue to care for the animals.

Titus used to work for the Humane Society in Texas. She said she fell on hard times and eventually landed in Oklahoma.

Now, she survives on her $700 Social Security check, most of which goes to feeding the dogs.

One Woman, 100 Dogs

But Titus said her situation is nothing compared to what the abandoned dogs have gone through.

"I get them wandering in from the pasture, stranded and beaten," Titus said.

Most are dogs she never asked for, but she's adopted them anyway, and once the word got out, they kept coming.

"I pick them up out of trash bags. I picked them up out of cardboard boxes," Titus said. "They tie them to the fence. They tie them to the gate."

Karin Morrison runs Compassion Seeds, an animal sanctuary just a few miles from Titus' home. Once she got word of the situation, Morrison and her co-workers jumped into action.

"She did a wonderful job for what she had to deal with," Morrison said. "Is there any help for these dogs? You know, you never know if there is any hope or not. Maybe for some, but not for all."

They have taken more than 40 dogs from Titus and spayed and neutered them in hopes of giving them a second chance.

"They need to be adopted. I've done what I can for them, but they deserve a home. They deserve as much love as anything else does," Titus said.

This beautiful girl was dropped off at a certified dog trainer's by a client who supposedly found her wandering alone. She is a product of mis-breeding, labeled a Lethal White Australian Shepherd. She is partially blind and deaf. This doesn't stop her from being wonderful or deserving a loving, forever home. She is young, eager to please, loves people, and is good with other dogs. The trainer is currently working on basic obedience with her and she is picking it up very well! The dog trainer's family would love to keep this dog, but are unable to due to living in temporary apartment housing due to Hurricane Ike.

This is Gunner. Gunner is a very smart dog. He learns commands in a matter of minutes. He bonds to people who make the effort to work with him. He is a great dog for someone who likes obedience work, play and exercise, There are several key things you should know about Gunner:

Sparky is a female pit mix about 2 years old. Poor Sparky has been here at the shelter since June- she came to the shelter as a possible cruelty case because her owner had been found choking her and she was emaciated. Sparky also came in with a circular patch of hair missing on her neck/back that looks like she may have been burnt. In the shelter Sparky has gained some weight and some skills! Luckily for Sparky one of our volunteers has been consistently working with her so that she does not get stressed, but now it’s time for Sparky to get out to find her forever home. Sparky knows “sit”, “stay” and “come” and is working on leash manners. Sparky is very food motivated and eager to please. She loves people and is affectionate, loves to run, and is learning how to play. Sparky does not get along with small dogs or cats, but is getting used to dogs her own size or larger. We think that once out of the isolation of our kennel environment Sparky can learn to be happy and social with other dogs. Like most active adolescents learning their manners, Sparky can get mouthy when very excited. Sparky is a sweet girl who’s had a bad start to life and desperately needs to get out of the shelter ASAP.

Gunner and Sparky have very limited time left. They are currently at a shelter that euthanizes for room. Please consider helping one of these great dogs. Please share this information with others.

Pumpkin: This little angel is a german shorthair pointer mix. When grown, if given the chance, she will be the love of your life. Softness and sweetness is all she exudes.

TIS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER

‘Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
Every shelter is full. We are lost but not found.

Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
We hope every minute that someone will care.

They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call,
“Come here, Max and Sparkie ~ come fetch your new ball!”

But now we just sit here and think of the days…..
We were treated so fondly ~ we had baby ways.

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew ~
Now we’re no longer young, and we’re no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
They reacted so quickly ~ why were they so rash?

We “jump on the children,” “don’t come when they call”,
We “bark when they leave us,” “climb over the wall.”

We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
Now we suffer the consequence of the errors they made.

If only they’d trained us, if only we knew…
We’d have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too.

We were left in back yard, or worse ~ left to roam…
Now we’re tired and lonely and out of a home.

They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-by….
“Maybe someone else will give you a try.”

So now here we are, all confused and alone….
In a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
With so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat.

They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer….
We know that they wonder how long we’ll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads….
Of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears ~
Our friends filled with emptiness, worry and fear.

This is Payton, a beautiful, young chocolate lab, border mix with wispy hair. He is just a love but is destined to lose his life if we can’t find him a home or foster by Friday. We are saddened as he has hardly had a start.

He is a wonderful, healthy mix. He is loyal, loving and gets along with everyone. He would be crazy about meeting you! Please give him the Christmas gift he deserves.

Jackonsville, FL - Skinny, injured dog needs rescue URGENT!

This poor girl was rescued by a Good Samaritan from an overpass. The dog was obviously lost, scared, and desperate. It is obvious she is fresh from weaning puppies (probably prematurely). She is emaciated and has some cuts and scrapes. Absolutely nothing else is known about this girl, but it is suspected she's has a horrible life thus far. The dog's rescuer has only had her for a few short hours, but she has been completely sweet and obedient the entire time. The rescuer is not in a situation to keep the dog, but she did take the dog to the vet. The vet suggested taking the dog to the local animal control facility, but that is basically a death sentence. All no-kill rescues in the area are beyond full.
Hopefully someone has a connection out there who can help. Please pass this on to anyone you know that might be able to help.

Keep your animals warm & safe this winter!

Because today is the first official day of winter, and it will probably only get worse from here, I've compiled some helpful tips to keep your animal companions safe, healthy, and warm this winter season.

Keep cats indoors - Even experienced outdoor cats can be at risk of freezing, getting lost, and being killed in the cold weather conditions. Also, cats like to climb up into engines or wheel wells of cars to keep warm. This is very dangerous for you kitty friend! (TIP: Before starting your engine, bang loudly on the hood of your car a few times to give the cat a warning. I even check each wheel to make sure nobody is curled up on top!)
Don't leave dogs outdoors - Let them out or take them for a walk only long enough to get a bit of exercise and do their business. Very young, very old, and short-haired require even less time outside and should always have supervision when outdoors in the cold. You might even consider buying a sweater or other protective weather gear for your dog.
Thoroughly wipe your dogs’ legs and stomach when they come in to prevent freezing from snow and ice. Check their pads for ice and snow as they can bleed from the snow and ice being encrusted on them.
Never leave your animal in a car during the cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold.
If your dog spends a lot of time outside, increase his food — particularly protein — to keep his fur thick and healthy.
Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.
If you spill antifreeze, clean it up right away. Even a very tiny dose is a lethal to pets. A pet-friendly antifreeze is now available for purchase. If your pet should get into antifreeze, call your vet as soon as possible.
Never shave your dog down to the skin in the winter. Leave the coat in a longer style for more warmth. When you bathe your dog, make sure he is completely dry before taking him out in the cold.
If your dog is an outside dog, make sure he has a dog house with plenty of straw inside to help keep him warm. Consider putting a flap on the front of the dog house to keep the cold wind out. Also consider putting the dog house up on blocks to keep it off the ground. Also, turn the opening away from the wind. The best bet is to take dogs into the house when the weather is really bad or put them in a garage.
Remember, regardless of the actual temperature, windchill can threaten a pet's life. Just because animals have fur does not mean they are suited and prepared to live in freezing temperatures!

Your animal companions deserve to live indoors with you and your family, especially in cold and/or bad weather. They should be like members of the family, and treated as such.

The postcards came infrequently, plastered with joyful photos of once-neglected cats and dogs happily settled into new homes.
Staff at the Humane Society of Durham Region loved each new missive, and would pin them to the Happy Endings board in the reception area. In a job like theirs, such images were the ultimate satisfaction.
Yesterday morning, all of those cards and more than 180 animals awaiting their own happy endings perished in a fire that gutted the Oshawa shelter.
Only 12 animals were rescued: nine dogs, two cats and feisty Bernard the rat.
The society is now trying to find a temporary shelter, while workers grapple with the loss of animals they had known for up to three years.
Shelter manager Ruby Richards arrived at the industrial park where the shelter is located at 2:30 a.m. yesterday and saw flames and smoke billowing into the sky in the midst of a snowstorm. "It's a nightmare," she said yesterday.
The rescued animals were taken to a 24-hour animal hospital in Whitby. Six were later returned to a temporary office set up at the Oshawa shelter, while three dogs and two cats remained under the care of a veterinarian.
The Humane Society of Durham Region is a no-kill shelter, euthanizing only animals that are terminally ill or dangerous. Cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents and other small domestic animals - rescued, found or abandoned - stayed for as long as it took to find a home.
"This is not just a job; it's a life for us," said animal-cruelty investigation officer Debby Houghton. "We know their names, we know what they like and don't like, how they were abused. Staff would take months and months to turn them around, so they could find a new home. It's a passion."
Some of the deceased animals already had homes lined up: A family that was meant to pick up their adopted chihuahua on Monday joined mourners outside the charred building yesterday morning.
"It will be a tough Christmas," Ms. Houghton said.
The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
Homes are being sought for the rescued animals, and with up to a dozen reports of animal abuse received in Durham Region each day, staff said there is little time to lose in setting up another shelter.
A mass cremation will be held for the deceased animals at the Oshawa Animal Services Centre. Ms. Richards said their ashes will be kept "until we can put them somewhere special."

These gorgeous black fluffy girls are Harley and Sunshine. They are black lab/chow mixes that were found wandering lost, and cannot understand why their people never came to find them. Both these girls have been spayed, microchipped, and brought up to date on their shots. They are young, happy, and very affectionate. It is suspected that Harley is Sunshine's daughter. They love people and have not shown any bad habits. Very sweet, loving girls. They get along well with other dogs. They can be adopted together or separately, but both desperately need a loving home as they have run out of time at their shelter because it is full. Wouldn't you like a little Sunshine in your life? And everyone loves a Harley, don't they? Please save these beautiful, sweet girls! Loving forever homes or caring foster homes needed.
Sunshine is between 2-3 yrs old and 50-60 lbs.
Harley is under or around 1 yr old and about 40 lbs.

A rescue worker is desperate to find this sweet little dog a home. She doesn't have much time left! The dog is a female. She is very sweet and kind with everyone. She only weighs about 7 lbs! She has some heavy tartar (which can probably be cleaned), and some vision problems (bilateral cataracts), but these are no reasons she shouldn't have a loving home!

Around 60 billion farm animals are used each year globally to produce meat, milk and eggs. The majority are raised in industrial farming systems where their welfare needs are not met.

Globally, there are some 600 million dogs, and a similar number of cats, of which an estimated 80% are stray or unwanted.

The illegal and often inhumane trade in wildlife and wildlife parts is a soaring black market worth $10 billion a year, exceeded only by arms and drug smuggling. Millions of wild animals are killed, captured or traded inhumanely in this shady business.

An estimated 80% of power input on farms in developing countries is supplied by draught animals, however the resources made available are often woefully inadequate, leading to significant welfare issues.

Animals are also affected on a huge scale by natural disasters, though seldom considered.

Improving animal welfare can also improve the welfare of people relying on these animals. Over a billion people directly rely on animals around the world for their livelihoods. People rely on animals' companionship as well, and in many cases animals are considered part of the family. For a global problem you need a global solution. Agreement on the importance of an issue affects people's attitudes, and people's attitudes affect their actions. A Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare would have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide.

Give the gift of helping animals this holiday!

Do you have an animal lover in your life? Are you stuck on things to ask for? Consider giving a gift of charity to help animals in a loved one's name, or ask for a gift to be given on your behalf. It's a great way to share the love of the season with other creatures in need.

I suggest contacting local pounds, shelters, and rescue organizations in your area if you would like to donate something in someone's name or in your name. Many allow you to sponsor an animal that has a condition that prevents him or her from being adopted. Some might have other options, such as saving an animal from death row. Most zoos allow people to sponsor animals for a year. Check with your local zoo to see if there is an animal you can "adopt" for something this year. Costs for this are usually low.
